The Wiltshire Law Centre is a registered charity, established in 1981 and has provided free independent advice on a range of issues through the years. Currently we provide advice on Housing, Anti Social Behaviour, Employment, Debt* and Welfare Benefits*.
We are contracted to the Legal Aid Agency and also contracted under the Housing Possession Court Duty scheme.
Wiltshire Law Centre can give advice and provide representation if you wish to make an appeal against a decision about benefit entitlement such as ineligibility for Employment Support Allowance, a Jobseekers Allowance sanction or an overpayment of benefit. Due to public spending cuts we have limited resources to provide welfare benefits advice.
Our funders provide for specialist advice only. * Therefore the specialist advisers will only deal with appeals against decisions on benefit entitlement referred by GreenSquare as this involves the best use of resources in dealing with complex legal issues. Those seeking advice on other benefit matters such as which benefit to claim, help claiming a benefit or delays in assessing entitlement will be signposted to CAB or other support agencies.
We deal with a wide range of Housing issues for both Council and private tenants. Issues with Housing Associations, housing benefit queries and claims, repair issues with landlords, mortgage arrears and repossession are all dealt with by us.
- We offer advice to clients on all aspects of debt including Council Tax arrears and dealing with Enforcement Officers, information on Bankruptcy and Debt Relief Orders if referred from GreenSquare Housing.
Employment: we offer a Pro-bono advice clinic in the evenings by appointment – please phone for details.
We are funded by the Legal Aid Agency to carry out legal aid work in Housing.
We currently have 5 advisors who between them have over 90 years experience! They include a Senior Solicitor, and skilled caseworkers.
- * Debt* and Welfare Benefits* advice currently, (as at May 2018) is only available to GreenSquare Housing Tenants.
- In the period April 2016 to March 2017, the Law Centre assisted nearly 400 clients providing invaluable on the day advice in the County Court under the Housing Possession Court Duty Scheme.
- The Law Centre provided detailed casework advice to 221 clients and their families in the period April 2016 to March 2017.
We are actively fundraising to ensure the survival of Wiltshire Law Centre and the services it provides to the people of Swindon and Wiltshire.
